Frequently Asked Questions
Reiki is a gentle, relaxing healing practice that originated in Japan over a century ago. Practitioners work with clients’ energy using a series of static hand placements on or around the body. Reiki can also be shared over a distance.
You may be familiar with the Chinese word “chi” or “qi,” often referenced in Eastern medicine or treatments like acupuncture. Reiki is rooted in similar principles. In fact, the “ki” in Rei-ki is simply the Japanese word used to describe that same energetic field! Loosely translated, “Reiki” means “universal life force energy.” As a modality, Reiki helps to balance your energy — and that has some incredible benefits!
Reiki can be a helpful option for people who struggle with stress management, emotional imbalance, fatigue, sleeping problems, muscle tension, physical ailments, and a number of other conditions. It is important to note that Reiki does not replace Western medicine; if you feel unwell, you should seek advice from a medical professional. At the same time, Reiki has tremendous value as a supplemental support. When our energy is in balance, our bodies and spirits have an optimized ability to heal. As we alleviate stress, we set ourselves up for greater success and wellness.
During an in-person Reiki session, you will lie on a table (similar to a massage table). You will remain fully clothed for your entire session, and your practitioner will provide pillows and blankets for your comfort. Once you lie down, there’s not much else for you to do! As you relax, your practitioner will move around you, gently resting their hands either on or slightly above your body in a series of locations. When your session time has ended, they’ll let you know. It’s ok if you fall asleep!
Just as every person’s energy is different, every Reiki session is different. During your session, you may experience sensations of warmth or cold, feel lightness or heaviness in your limbs, see colors or flashes of images in your mind’s eye, or feel tingling in your fingers or toes. Or you may feel nothing at all. It’s all normal. Rest assured, there is no wrong way to receive Reiki.
Reiki is not affiliated with a particular religion and is open to anyone.
Some people do choose to incorporate energy healing and/or Reiki sharing as part of their personal spiritual practice, but it is not an official part of any organized faith and does not require any specific belief system. All are welcome.
Yes! Distance Reiki, also known as virtual Reiki or remote Reiki, is just as effective as an in-person session. Energy has the capacity to transcend physical gaps, whether the practitioner’s hands are hovering a few inches above your body or you’re hundreds of miles apart.
Distance Reiki is a fantastic option for people who don’t have a trusted Reiki practitioner nearby, who have scheduling conflicts or accessibility challenges with in-person sessions, or who simply prefer to relax in the comfort of their own home.

Reiki is about so much more than relaxation (although that’s an important part!). It’s about empowerment and connecting with a piece of ourselves that is often neglected during our day-to-day hustle. As someone who receives Reiki, I feel that it brings me closer to the best version of myself. As a practitioner, I enjoy watching the people on my table discover a sense of peace and balance that impacts them long after the session has ended.
At the same time, I understand how the idea of Reiki and energy healing can seem a little ‘woo-woo,’ or even intimidating, for a lot of people. If it’s something you’re curious about, I encourage you to learn more, ask questions, and explore. You may be surprised at what you find, or even uncover an intuitive pull calling you to book your first session!
No matter how your journey unfolds, I hope the information on this page provides helpful context. And if there’s anything I can do to offer additional clarity, please reach out. I would love to hear from you.
